COURSE FAQS

Join us for 10 days of intensive on-river training in world-famous Brown's Canyon National Monument! Build life-long friendships while camping among the breathtaking peaks of Buena Vista, Colorado!

SOME OF WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

  • How to "read the river, " identify water features, and steer a boat

  • Rigging and transporting boats, boat care, and boat anatomy

  • River etiquette, customer care, and guide responsibilities

  • How to manage safety situations in the river (flips, injuries, etc.)

  • Environmental stewardship practices

  • All skills necessary to become a certified raft guide in the state of Colorado*

IT'S NOT YOUR TYPICAL GUIDE SCHOOL:

cityWILD is a nonprofit organization that strives to create a more just, sustainable, and equitable world-- specifically working to ensure that the outdoors are accessible and welcoming for all.

While you will leave this guide school with the technical skills necessary to pursue your dream job in one of the most famous rafting locations in the nation, you will also gain skills in:

  • Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (JEDI)

  • Trauma informed practices

  • Positive Youth Development and Experiential Education
     

After completing the course, participants who successfully meet the requirements to commercially guide rafts in Colorado, and who have developed an understanding of cityWILD frameworks, will be eligible for hire as a contract guide on the cityWILD team.

 

*Most people take more than one season to fully complete certification. Continued learning opportunities are available.


COST: $400

This cost includes 10 days of training, lunches, and borrowed gear. We are committed to making sure that guide school is open to all. Please reach out to us to discuss scholarships or work trades if needed! Additional information about accommodations, required gear, etc. are on the website below.
