Approximately once a month, cityWILD students in the Afterschool Program are chosen to participate in a Weekend Expeditions. These 1-3 day excursions build on the skills taught in the Afterschool Program, including a focus on working as a group, decision making, leadership building opportunities, and technical skill development.
Depending on the season, students and staff participate in a variety of different weekend adventure activities. Single day trips can include rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting and park days. Multi-day trips can include the above as well as snowshoeing, winter camping/yurt overnights, snowboarding, and rafting on the Arkansas River.
Weekend Expedition experiences are great build-up to week-long Summer Expeditions.
In the Spring when students are on Spring Break, cityWILD takes them on a multi-day Spring Break Expedition, weather and funding permitting. In addition, during the summer months, cityWILD students can expect to participate in several Summer Expeditions.
These more involved trips are the culmination of the program and often times the greatest opportunity for students to shine and practice their leadership. Summer trips include white water rafting, rock climbing, hiking, camping, trail maintenance, and other outdoor activities. Summer expeditions take place Monday through Friday while parents are working. This leaves valuable weekend time available for families to spend it together.
During the summer months, when cityWILD is not running a week-long trip, single day trips are available. These may include urban farming, mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting on the S. Platte River, or ropes courses. These trips are great for students who cannot commit to a full week away.
All or part of these operations are conducted on Public Lands under special permit from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
